Then God named the dry ground \u201cland\u201d and he named the collected waters \u201cseas.\u201d God recognised that it was good.<\/p>\n<p>\tThen God said, \u201cLet the land sprout plants: crops<sup><a href=\"#1_nso-0\" name=\"1_nso-0_home\">1<\/a><\/sup> and fruit-trees producing varieties of fruit containing its seed.\u201d And it was so. So the land produced plants\u2014varieties of crops and varieties of trees bearing fruit containing its seed. God recognised that it was good, and there was evening and then morning, a third day.<\/p>\n<p>\tThen God said, \u201cLet there be lights on<sup><a href=\"#2_nso-0\" name=\"2_nso-0_home\">2<\/a><\/sup> the barrier of the sky to separate between the day and the night, and let them mark the times for days and years, and let them be lights on the barrier of the sky to shed light on the land.\u201d And it was so.<\/p>\n<p>\tGod made the two great lights\u2014the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night\u2014and the stars. God placed them on the barrier of the sky to shine on the land, to govern<sup><a href=\"#3_nso-0\" name=\"3_nso-0_home\">3<\/a><\/sup> the day and the night, and to separate between the light and the darkness. And God recognised that it was good. And there was evening and then morning, a fourth day.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr\/>\n<p><a name=\"1_nso-0\" href=\"#1_nso-0_home\">1.<\/a> The expression \u05e2\u05e9\u05d1 \u05de\u05d6\u05e8\u05d9\u05e2 \u05d6\u05e8\u05e2 is usually rendered \u201cseed-bearing plants.\u201d This raises the question: why the qualification about seeds, are there any plants which do not bear seeds? I suspect something more specific is on view here, and that is that the plants on view are crops and that the expression focuses on the \u2018sowing\u2019 aspect of the verb \u05d6\u05e8\u05e2. By extension, the reference to \u2018fruit-trees\u2019 probably focuses specifically on those cultivated for food. Furthermore, verses 29\u201330 specifically identify these plants as being for human consumption but also draw a distinction from other plants (\u05db\u05dc \u05d9\u05e8\u05e7 \u05e2\u05e9\u05d1) which are for animals. Cultivated crops are certainly in view later in Gen 2:5.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2_nso-0\" href=\"#2_nso-0_home\">2.<\/a> Note <em>HALOT<\/em> on the use of the preposition \u05d1 says \u201c5. in association with high objects \u05d1 means upon: \u05d1\u05d7\u05e8\u05d1&nbsp;1K 8<sub>9<\/sub>, \u05d1\u05e1\u05d5\u05e1\u05d9\u05dd Is 66<sub>20<\/sub>.\u201d So also in subsequent uses of \u05d1 here in reference to the placement of lights on the barrier.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"3_nso-0\" href=\"#3_nso-0_home\">3.<\/a> \u201cGovern\u201d is fairly neutral in Australian English, although I\u2019m concerned a little over its connotations in US English where you actually have governors (or a \u201cgovernator\u201d in California), so the term may be less suitable in that context.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been too long since the last installment in this series, partly due to holidays, partly due to internet problems, and partly due to being too busy, but here come the next two days of Genesis 1 at last.
